 Sit and Lay down

To get your dog to sit take a treat (about the size of a pea) and lure the dog by taking the treat at the nose allowing the nose to follow the hand as you guide it back towards the dogs behind going up over the dog’s head and not around.

To get your dog to lay down take a pea sized treat and lure the dog from the sitting position to the lay down position by making a line from the dog’s nose to the ground slowly , you then draw the line out slowly toward yourself (if this does not work take the treat and push in towards the dog’s tummy to get the dogs to back up enough to lay down.)

Come and Stay

To get your dogs to come to you take a treat show the dog you have it and lure the dogs nose to you as the dos walks toward you say come. (don’t forget the fun games we played ) and this exercise should be done inside or on a leash/lead outside.

To get your dog to stay first I recommend you get your dog in a sit or lay down position. once your dog is doing either of the two place your hand in a STOP gesture in front of the dogs face and give the dog a treat. the next step is to take half a step back still making the STOP gesture now say “stay” and give your dog a treat continue taking small steps back until your dog will stay from a room’s length away then try slowly turning around.Note:  if your dog gets up start over.

 Off and leave it

To get your dog to stay off of things can be tricky there are a few things we can do.

one lure your dog up onto something then when the dog is up lure him back off and say off and give a treat. or while your dog is already up when not lured take the treat to the dog’s nose draw a line off and once the dog has all four feet off give the treat and say off.  If the dog is jumping (Note a big deterrent for jumping is to simply turn away from the dog if the dog is persistent try clapping as loud as you can to re- rout the brain it works as it is an unpleasant sound to the dog.)

The leave it command. To get your dog to leave it take a handful  of treats in one hand and one or two treats in the other, the hand with the most treats show to the dog and close your hand quickly the dog will smell the hand might lick or paw at ( don’t let your dog hurt you ) when the dog stops for a second and looks away say “leave it” and give a treat from the other hand. once you have successfully done this start from a small drop so maybe 6 inches off the ground let your dog see you dropped it and before he gets it cover back up quickly repeat this exercise like you did the first one with the treats in your hand. The last step is to stand up after gradually increasing the dropping point use your foot to cover the treats quickly. The goal is to get your dogs to leave whatever he or she is not supposed to get into or have. This exercise can save your dog’s life just think about all the things people can drop .. glass, grapes, medication….

To use leave it on a walk. When the dog sees something yummy like a dead bird or some ones torn open garbage tug on the leash with a couple of flicks (careful not to injure the dog) and say leave it and toss a treat in front of the dog  to keep the dog moving forward.

Walk easy:  When on a walk, first make sure you are holding the leash correctly, in your dominate hand hold the loop of the leash and  in your other hand hold towards the center of the leash, the leash should be across your body like the reigns of a horse.  As you are walking, if you feel any tension or pull on the leash stop and ask the dog to leave it and sit. Once the dog is sitting give it a second and continue on your walk do this every time you feel the dog pull. If the dog is being very rambunctious, back the dog up and wait for the dog to be calm or go in a different direction then where the dog wants to pull to. Give a treat and praise for any desired behavior.

For potty in the house!  Vigilance is the key ,when you notice that the dogs is no longer in the room it would be wise to go check. If she /he starts to walk the perimeter of the room she may have to go out. if it is a puppy or rescue dog, after eating ,drinking water or playing  it is wise to let the dog outside to potty and when the dog has gone potty outside say good dog and give a treat. Note that a puppy should go potty every couple of hours as their bladder is slowing getting stronger the time between potty breaks will increase, slowly have your dog wait a little longer as the puppy gets older. An example if your pup goes potty every day at 11:00 try to make them wait to 11:15 and continue this trend until the pup can wait to 12:00 this is a slow process and be sure not to push your pup to fast or accidents will be frequent.

Target or touch game: take a sticky note and place in hand, take a treat and rub it on the sticky note let dog see it when dog smells sticky note and nose touches say target or touch and give a treat from opposite hand do this 3-5 times or until the dog will touch the sticky note with the command touch or target. now that your dog will do that move the note to a toy or something of his/hers like a leash or food bowl and start from the beginning so the dog knows to now touch the new object.. the object over time and practice can become a light switch or bells at the door to let you know they have to go out or it can be a panic button in a time of need.
